” The way to gain anything is to lose it ” reflects the development of the the spirit towards the dispassion & renunciation in materialistic life. To gain something, you must first lose something. The more you would like to gain, the more you must be willing to lose. Ultimately, to gain everything, you must lose everything.
Before going through Bhagavad Gita , first consider a situation, you’re doing what you love and you’re currently working on your startup. Now, in order to complete your product development as soon as possible and take it to your customers first, you need to lose something, to gain something, and what they’re?

Your comfort zone. By watching TV, sleeping 8–10 hours, going to parties, chilling, wasting time on Instagram, do you think you’ll achieve it?
What you’ll gain?
What you had thought of. In this case, completing your product development as soon as possible.
Why is it said in Bhagavad Gita ? ” The way to gain anything is to lose it “
Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 4, Verse 12
काङ् क्षन्त: कर्मणां सिद्धिं यजन्त इह देवता: |
क्षिप्रं हि मानुषे लोके सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा || 12||
kāṅkṣhantaḥ—desiring; karmaṇām—material activities; siddhim—success; yajante—worship; iha—in this world; devatāḥ—the celestial gods; kṣhipram—quickly; hi—certainly; mānuṣhe—in human society; loke—within this world; siddhiḥ—rewarding; bhavati—manifest; karma-jā—from material activities

The celestial gods give boons only by the powers bestowed upon them by the Supreme Lord. People with small understanding approach them, but those who are intelligent realize that there is no point in going to the intermediary and they approach the Supreme Lord for the fulfillment of their aspirations. People are of various kinds, possessing higher and lower aspirations. So, we see here we have been conditioned to perform actions that get quick results. We make instant coffee and it gives us instant satisfaction. And when we want results that are beyond our immediate control, we approach and appease forces in nature that can grant us the result we need. These forces could be human beings – we may propitiate a local politician if we want to set up a business in a particular town.
Wisdom of dedicating actions ( sacrifice ) is one of the five main aspects of karmayoga. So therefore, these shlokas deal with the topic of Ishvaraa so that he will become the ultimate ideal to whom we can dedicate all our actions to. No one is born with all the knowledge in the world. As we go down our life path we try, we fail, and we make mistakes. But with every life battle we loose we also learn, and voila! That’s wisdom gained!
