What is the 21/90 formula? | Life Hack of 21/90 Rule

As per the 21 90 Rule, it takes 21 days to make or change a habit and takes 90 days to permanently make a lifestyle. Commit to a goal or habit for 21 straight days. After three weeks, the pursuit of that goal should have become a habit. Once you’ve established that habit, you continue to do it for another ninety days. If you keep up something for three weeks and then ninety days, then it should become a permanent lifestyle change.

Who made the 21\90 Rule? | A Little History Behind 21/90 Rule

The 21/90 formula was born in 1960, when a cosmetic surgeon called Dr Maxwell Maltz ( know more about him here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell_Maltz ) wrote a self-help book called Psycho Cybernetics, A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life. In his book he suggested that it takes a mere 21 days of practice for an old mental image of us to dissolve and a new one to establish. In the ’50s, Maltz performed several operations and noticed that it took his patients, on average, 21 days to get used to whatever changed. From nose jobs to phantom limbs, he observed it took those strange 21 days to adjust. Later, Phillippa Lally, a psychology researcher from the University College London, decided to conduct a study to find out more precise data regarding how long habit forming takes.

According to Lally, it takes about 21 days to adjust, but not to completely settle into a new habit. That’s a little longer. Over three times longer, in fact. Her research showed that it takes just over two months for something to become an automatic practice in a person’s life. The first 21 days help to get the gears turning and the follow-up to 90 days really cements the habit.

So, how do we see the 21/90 rule in action?

To put it in action, commit yourself to a habit you want to add to your life and do that thing for 21 days. Whether it’s drinking water with each meal, cutting sugar from your coffee, running in the morning or whatever habit you want to picture yourself doing for life, do it just for three weeks.

By then, it’ll kind of be in your life and it’ll be easier to keep it going. A few months later, it won’t only be a habit, but it will be a part of your lifestyle. A permanent change. And all it took was the initial three weeks.
