A well portrayed story of our legend star Mithali Raj, that opens up about the reality of being a women cricketer in India and put in the picture that how people were downright ignorant about the existence of the Indian women’s cricket team. The movie enlightens the audiences with the kind of practical difficulties and obstacles our women cricketers have to go through. Taapsee has done a fabulous job and goes an extra mile to put her great effort to internalise Mithali Raj as a person. Likewise the other actors playing the women in blue. They have all delivered it perfectly. Vijay Raaz is as usual fantastic. Special mentions to the two young kids who steals your heart with their stellar performances.
The writer has peppered the film with some very fine dramatic and entertaining moments which keep the interest going. Some scenes are illustrated well, infused with enough charm. Like the one, where the girls sit around trying to reduce the weight of their bags, the men’s team arrives at the terminal to a thunderous reception from other passengers. The boys are being led to the lounge with great fanfare. The another scene, where during a practice session, she keeps dragging her backfoot. Sampath first tells, then scolds, and when nothing works hammers a nail on her shoe, literally affixing it to the pitch.
Coming to music facet, Amit Trivedi’s notes enthralls you once again. The two versions of ‘Hindustan Meri Jaan’ are quite adrenaline-pumping. But ‘Agaaz Hai Tu’ and ‘Woh Galiyaan’ fails to entice with narrative a little bit. ‘Fateh’ is foot-tapping but could have been picturized better. Cinematography is quite plain in many shots , however is quite justified for a sport film. While it’s understandable that the central subject of the film is known to be a less expressive person, the essence is balanced with her relationships with her childhood friend, coach and other teammates. Overall, the film deserves to be watched for the journey of a woman, who is responsible for the incredible rise of Indian Women’s cricket in the last two decades.
