THE SIX GHOSTS OF FEAR
In his classic success book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill mentions six basic fears that you have to be vigilant about or you’ll get spooked. He refers to them as “ghosts” — appearing real, but actually imaginary. Overcoming these “ghosts of fear” is key to being able to execute the 13 principles of success that Hill has provided in earlier chapters of this book. As, fear stops more people from reaching their goals and dreams than anything else.
The Six Ghosts of Fear
Hill identified the following as six basic fears that every human being suffers with at one time or another. As you read through some of the signs and symptoms of each fear, determine how many you have:
The fear of poverty
There are two people types. There are those with success consciousness and those with poverty consciousness. This consciousness resides in the mind and is influenced by three things:
- Who you associate with
- Your mind input
- The decisions you make
Poverty is the most destructive ghost and the most difficult fear to master. Fear of Poverty is overcome by applying a definite purpose, having confidence, doing the hard work, associating with the right people, adopting a positive mental attitude, and making sensible decisions.
The Fear of Criticism
What “they” say or think. But first, Who are “they”? Entirely imaginary beings—just like ghosts—but they’re surprisingly powerful. They stupefy enthusiasm. They destroy your imagination. And they make it practically impossible to achieve anything beyond mediocrity. This is the most common fear that can hold you back — the fear of how other people might judge you if you were to do what you wanted to do
The Fear of Ill-Health
Many illnesses are not real. They’re figments of people’s imaginations—just like ghosts. But the fear of disease and the many imagined maladies that infect human minds can manifest as realistic, symptomatic presentations in their bodies. People think themselves into illness and when the symptoms illusionary appear, they’re convinced. And the circle continues.
The Fear of Loss of Love
This is the painful ghost. This ghost prevails misery and devastation and soulful destruction. It can negatively manifest itself in jealousy, prompting suspicions and accusations. Also, If you find yourself pushing your loved ones away or failing to cultivate relationships as a whole because you fear the worst possible outcome, your fear has potentially grown problematic. If you cannot connect with the loved ones you already have because you are afraid of how much it will hurt if they pass away or leave, you may need to address this fear of loss.
The Fear of Old Age
This fear is driven by ill health, diminishing sexual attractiveness, and loss of physical and economic freedom. Some people slow down and develop and inferiority complex because they believe they are “slipping.” The Fear of Old Age instills the habit of speaking apologetically of one’s self as “being old” merely because one has reached the age of forty, or fifty, instead of expressing gratitude for having reached the age of wisdom and understanding.
The Fear of Death
To some, this is the cruelest of all the basic fears. But as Napoleon Hill points out, if death is not mere change or transition, then nothing comes after death except a long, eternal, peaceful sleep. And since sleep is nothing to be feared, you may wipe out forever the fear of death. Death will come regardless of what we think about it.
How to Outwit the Six Ghosts of Fear
Mastering how to outwit the six ghosts of fear means figuring out a way to replace each fear with alternate thinking. For instance, instead of fearing poverty, decide to manage with the money you have without worrying about it; banish fear of criticism by resolving to not care what others think, do or say; instead of fearing old age, view it as a blessing that carries with it wisdom and so on.
Mastering how to outwit the six ghosts of fear also means eliminating the habit of worry by realizing that nothing is worth the price of worry.
You have the power to control your mind, filling it with whatever you choose. You are responsible for using this power constructively.
