The world as we know it has three dimensions of space—length, width and depth—and one dimension of time. But there’s the mind-bending possibility that many more dimensions exist out there. According to string theory, one of the leading physics model of the last half century, the universe operates with 10 dimensions. But that raises a big question: If there are 10 dimensions, then why don’t we experience all of them or haven’t detected them? Lisa Grossman at ScienceNews reports that a new paper suggests an answer, showing that those dimensions are so tiny and so fleeting that we currently can’t detect them.

How many dimensions are there?

Superstring theory, a variation on ST, requires the existence of 10 spacetime dimensions. These include the four dimensions immediately apparent to us (length, width, depth, time) and six more that are not.

These extra six dimensions are curled up into a compact space. On order the string scale (10-33 cm) we wouldn’t be able to detect the presence of these extra dimensions directly because they’re just too small.

For astrophysicists and theoretical physicists, compactification and the idea that extra dimensions are tiny explains why the Universe still exists billions of years after its emergence. If these dimensions were larger, they would accommodate enough matter to trigger gravitational collapses and the formation of black holes (which would consume the rest of the Universe).

What are the Ten dimensions of Universe ? | 10 Dimensions explained

A Point has no dimensions. It exists at one, fixed spacetime coordinate and has no variable or degree-of-freedom.

The First dimension, is that which gives it length (aka. the x-axis). A good description of a one-dimensional object is a straight line, which exists only in terms of length. It has no other distinguishable qualities other than moving back & forth.

Add to it a Second dimension, the y-axis (or height), and you get an object that becomes a 2-dimensional shape (like a square).

The Third dimension involves depth (the z-axis), and gives all objects a sense of volume.

Scientists believe that the Fourth dimension is time. Along with the three other dimensions, knowing an objects position in time is essential to plotting its position in the universe or the space-time.

The Fifth dimension

With the Fifth dimension, other possibilities for our world open up. So an object in the 5th dimension will be the line joining two alternate realities. Say you went to a shop to buy a particular wallet which was available in two colors, black and white. In one reality u buy the black wallet but as a result in the alternate reality you would have bought a white wallet. If we were capable of vision in the 5th dimension we could see the two separate timelines and the realities of each go on parallel to each other and we can compare the differences between each one of them.

The Sixth dimension

The Sixth dimension will look like a plane containing all the possible realities where every reality has the same start. So in this plane of observation you could see yourself becoming a rock star in one reality the president in another and a psychotic serial killer in yet another. The key is the events should have the same beginning like in the above case its your birth. The same can also be visualized for the entire earth like in the picture below or any event with the Big Bang as the starting point.

The Seventh dimension

The Seventh dimension would be a line joining our Infinity with another separate Infinity which has its own separate big bang and realities distinct from that produced in our Infinity. Now this can be difficult to understand but we have to realize that there there may be other universes with starting conditions different than that of our big bang and so there universes will be entirely different from out own.

The Eight dimension

The Eight dimension would be a plane consisting of all possible Infinities i.e. it would be a plane consisting of all possible infinities multiplied by all possible starting conditions.

The key factor here is that even though all these infinities are distinct each one of them follow the same laws of physics and the fundamental things like the speed of light are the same till the Eight dimension.

The Ninth dimension

The Ninth dimension would now treat the eight dimensional plane as a single point. A line in the 9th dimensions would join two eight dimensional points where each point has its own separate laws of physics.

The Tenth dimension

Finally the Tenth dimension would be a plane of all possible infinities of all possible universes multiplied by all the possible laws of physics.

The best place to explore further might be Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. It was written in 1884 as a satirical allegory using math to illustrate different social strata. It experienced a resurgence after Einstein presented his theory of relativity. Name-checked by Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking it proves to be a good way to introduce higher dimensions to anyone.

Final Takeaway

String theory states there must be at least 10 dimensions of space plus one dimension for time, but there are physicists who argue that there are more. Some posit a universe composed of 11 space dimensions. While, Bosonic String Theory insists its all about total 26 dimensions !! And it’s as high as mainstream physicists are willing to go for the time being. The scientific belief that the universe is made up of ten dimensions or more is an attempt to take all the physical laws we understand and find out how they fit together. In that respect, it’s like assembling a puzzle, where each piece makes sense to us, but we are unaware of what the bigger picture looks like.
