Gita on स्थितप्रज्ञ

Sthita (स्थित) means steady and pragya(प्रज्ञ) means wisdom. Sthitapragya ( स्थितप्रज्ञ ) refers to a person of steady wisdom, the one who has experienced the truth from within. Understanding the perspective of Gita on स्थितप्रज्ञ enables you to know how an individual with steady wisdom transacts in this world. Here are two delights presented to you as Gita Verses to make you establish more on Sthitapragya ( स्थितप्रज्ञ )

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2, Verse 55

प्रजहाति यदा कामान्सर्वान्पार्थ मनोगतान् |
आत्मन्येवात्मना तुष्ट: स्थितप्रज्ञस्तदोच्यते || 2.55||

prajahāti = gives up; yadā = when; kāmān = desires for sense gratification; sarvān = of all varieties; pārtha = O son of Pritha; manogatān = of mental concoction; ātmāni = in the pure state of the soul; eva = certainly; ātmanā = by the purified mind; tuṣṭaḥ = satisfied; sthitaprajñaḥ = transcendentally situated; tadā = at that time; ucyate = is said.

When a man completely casts off, O Partha, all the desires of the mind, and is satisfied in the Self by the Self, then is he said to be one of steady Wisdom.

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2, Verse 57

य: सर्वत्रानभिस्नेहस्तत्तत्प्राप्य शुभाशुभम् |
नाभिनन्दति न द्वेष्टि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता || 2.57||

yaḥ = one who; sarvatra = everywhere; anabhisnehaḥ = without affection; tat = that; tat = that; prāpya = achieving; śubha = good; aśubhaṃ = evil; na = never; abhinandatī = praises; na = never; dveṣṭi = envies; tasya = his; prajñā = perfect knowledge; pratiṣṭhitā = fixed.

One who remains unattached under all conditions, and is neither delighted by good fortune nor dejected by tribulation, he is a sage with perfect knowledge.

The teachings of Gita are applicable equally to everyone ; whatever be his profession, vocation or situation in life. Here with these two verses of Gita on स्थितप्रज्ञ ( Sthitapragya ) Shri Krishna guides us that since this person of steady wisdom has extinguished all his desires, he is always content and does not need to rush out into the world of material objects. This is because he has realized his association with the eternal essence, which pervades the entire universe and therefore is always complete and content.

When one has an equanimous mind, is free from fear and anger, whose mind is focused, who is led not by impulses but by considered opinion – such a person of illumined intelligence is most likely to succeed in whatever he does. When such an attitude becomes spontaneous in one’s life, he moves from hopelessness to hope.
