The Kashmir Files Review
The Kashmir Files narrates the unfortunate events of January 1990 when lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits were compelled to leave their homes and become refugees in their own country. The movie depicts the true events as to how and why they had to leave overnight without taking their belongings only for the sake of protecting their honor and precious lives.
Characters in The Kashmir Files are nothing short of ‘real people’. The film makes you feel extremely uncomfortable in its stretch of a little less than 3 hours with the sheer brutality, barbarism & inhuman acts showed. Anupam Kher as Pushkar Nath delivers by far his strongest and most convincing performance. Given that Kher himself is a Kashmiri Pandit, Agnihotri couldn’t have cast a better actor than him for the role. Darshan Kumar as ‘Krishna’ is shown as brainwashed youth of today who doesn’t seek the truth but follows what is spoon-fed to them. Though the role could have been more challenging, his last 15 min monologue covers up that.
Initially grip of the film is good, but in the middle pace becomes very slow and fails to hold the grip until reaching end. Though the film is bit politically inclined, audience would welcome more balanced films on this topic with all perspectives .Some scenes are so realistically recreated that you get the feel of actually standing right there beside them witnessing the atrocities they faced. But sometimes the repeated transition as flashback in is not very natural and could have been more engaging. Some of the group argument scenes seem overact and less engaging.
Little sensitive background music and good cinematography, and better VFX editing was expected by Zee Studios, which was not up to the mark. Having read some literatures on Kashmir stories before, brutality and the depth of the reality shown in the movie I found, is bit lower than the reality. Also, sensitive viewers may suffer from visual PTSD, so watch out on your own risk.
Overall, a must watch for everyone who wants to know the real truth and facts about the horrendous genocide in country’s history which we haven’t read about. How the place which was once the center of abundant knowledge of our culture is being destroyed constantly over the period of thousands of years leading to multiple exodus and genocides.
